EMDSO Monthly Meeting:

The club's April meeting was held at Pat McDonald's place on Saturday, April 19. The Following is the president's (Rick Schwentker's) minutes from the meeting:

• In Attendance: Ray Mueller, Dan Ianke, Rachel & Paul Chambers, Pat McDonald and Rick Schwentker.

• Next meeting: Will be held at 7 :00 pm on Saturday May 17 at Pat’s

• Treasurer’s Report: $927.40 is in the treasury.

• Outreach Appreciation: Rick read thank you card from Marbach El Nechar German students.

• Mid-States Region of Astronomical League 2008 Convention: EMDSO is invited. hosted by the Astronomical Society of Eastern MO on June 20-21st, 2008 at the St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, MO. See full details at www.ASEMonline.org for agenda and Map to location. Short summary at end of news letter.

• Website News: A proposal by Joe Bougeno to build a functional EMDSO website that either he or other members could modify and upload pics and info to was discussed. He is currently preparing a design and ideas that we could consider. He is proposing to do this in exchange for an EMDSO membership. EMDSO members present voted to move forward on this issue and considered a functional website to be needed. Joe indicated there were other costs for space on a server and a Domain name registration, a site hosting fee and an email forwarding. Questions were posed about using existing web space. I will attempt to get Joe to discuss these issues at our next meeting. Al Walters indicated he has 50 Mbytes to donate to the club. A question of why the current site cannot be used since there is no cost to the club for use of this site. He indicated that the URL is incorrect on the web site and that to contact him you will need to use al@hotpapermoney.com (his business site so donate give out to advertisers).

• Potential New Members: Al Walters has two potential members that want to view. Al indicated he would like to see an easy to follow MAP available to members.

• Advertising Issue-Website or Newsletter?: A member asked about putting advertising a telescope for sale. Joe took this info and indicated that ads might not be appropriate for the newsletter but members discussed this at our meeting. The general feeling was that this information might be a service for information that would benefit members as long as too many ads aren’t placed in any given issue of the newsletter. If ads increase possibly a charge could be made.

• Outreach News: Jerry Kelly sent out a request for help in hosting a Boy Scout Observing Session on April 26th in Leasburg, MO. Members at the meeting did not volunteer. Most indicated they were busy on that weekend and also indicated that the price of fuel in driving to Leasburg was causing them to be more selective in attending events like this. The members of EMDSO present at this meeting voted to cancel the Public viewing event in scheduled for May. Reason was conflicts with other family and professional activities. This event will be rescheduled but will be announced at a later date, possibly later in the summer or fall.

• Email List: Rick will try to update the email list and provide it to members.

• Meeting Adjourned.

• Meeting Presentation: Dan Ianke spoke to the club on tools used for observation: resource books, stellariums, computer software and rules for keeping a log book. It was an excellent presentation and made an astronomically bleak cloudy meeting night seem pretty interesting. Thanks Dan!
